International Women’s Day Statement:

On behalf of the team at PEERU and the youthful community we serve, we are glad to join hands with the rest of the world to celebrate women and girls across Uganda and beyond. The theme of the 2023 International Women’s Day is “DigitALL: Innovation and technology for gender equality”. The gender digital divide prevents women from fully reaping the benefits of the digital transition. Through various Digital Strategies, Peer To Peer Uganda – PEERU seeks to ensure adolescent girls and women’s equal access to the untapped potential of digital technologies.

This International Women’s Day 2023, we think of the resilience and strength of adolescent girls and young women in diversity. Their resolve to stand up against injustice. Their dedication to protecting others. Their unrelenting strive for change.

Not only today, but every day, we stand united with all women to build momentum for their rights across the globe. PEERU is committed to continuing empowering adolescent girls and young women to pursue their life goals unhindered.

The growing oppression globally on women and girls and attacks on their human rights are alarming.

We stand by women in various rural communities, whose freedoms are systematically restricted by conservative cultural and religious norms and values; in the world where women’s fundamental rights and freedoms MUST be respected

We recognize the amazing work done by the government of Uganda in supporting the girlchild; however, more is still desired. PEERU has taken landmark decisions to ensure that adolescent girls and young women in Uganda have the same opportunities as men through initiatives like HER Voice Fund, 03 Program, and the Youth Mentorship program, among others. We want to see the government of Uganda bring to book all pepecuators of GBV and also have them fully serve their sentences once convicted by law if we are to successfully combat violence against women and domestic violence.

There is more work to be done by all stakeholders at all levels. Real equal rights are still a long way to be full achieved in a developing country like Uganda, however we shall not give up on demanding for accountability from all stakeholders including the Government of Uganda in terms of upholding the rights and values of Girls and Women.

Gender equality will only be achieved the day we are all part of its promotion and defense, be it in our homes or in the communities at large.”
