i-Care initiative

Peer To Peer Uganda (PEERU) with funding from CEHURD through CSMMUA implemented the “I-care initiative- the advocacy drive to prevent and or reduce maternal mortality due to unsafe abortion among adolescent girls and young women at the grassroot level.

The goal of our project was to initiate advocacy drives that empower individuals to independently advocate for prevention and/or reduction in maternal mortality due to unsafe abortion among adolescent girls and young women in Busia district. The project was implemented in 9 sub counties which included; Buhehe, Majanji, Masafu, Dabani, Eastern division, Busime, Sikuda, Western Division and Lumino.

Our project goal was to contribute towards improved access and uptake of Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) services among AGYW in order to prevent and/or reduce maternal mortality due to unsafe abortion.

1.To strengthen the capacity of district local leaders on maternal health, and safe and legal abortion.

2.Build Capacity of Adolescent Girls and Young Women in Busia District at district level to amplify their community level awareness, engagements and action through advocacy for implementation of Petition-16 Constitutional Court Judgement on maternal health.

3.To empower Health care providers at district level towards enhancing access to Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) services for key populations at facility level.

1. Engaged Adolescent Girls and Young mothers in Busia District on how to advocate for the implementation of Petition-16 Constitutional Court Judgement on maternal health at district level.

2. Engaged district level and subcounty level leaders on how to prevent and/or reduce maternal mortality due to unsafe abortion among adolescent girls and young women in Busia through them championing advocacy. We also successfully engaged 30 district and community district leaders from the 9 sub counties where we had earlier selected AGYW from and further engaged them on how to support community level advocacy that is aimed at increasing community level awareness, engagements and action on issues that affect them. We further used this grant to strategically push messages on issues of safe and legal abortion in Uganda across the key district leaders, health workers, and AGYW were we encouraged them to cascade these messages to their other members.

3. Worked towards health systems strengthening through supporting 22 health facilities in Busia district from to enhance access to Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) services for key populations at facility level. The Health Facilities supported included; Buwumba HC II, Musichimo HC III, Mbehenyi HC III, Busime HC II, Lunyo HC III, Hasyule HC II, Sibona HC II, Bumunji HC II, Buteba HC III, Buhehe HC III, Mawero HC II, Dabani Hospital, Namasolyo HC II, Busitema HC III, Masafu Hospital, Namungodi HC II, Sikuda HC III, Habuleke HC II, Mundindi HC II, Bulumbi HC II, Majanji HC III, Tiiraha HC II.
